How HEX becomes CMYK

CMYK depends on the printer, ink and paper. This is the plain device-independent formula; a print shop's ICC profile gives different numbers.

When you need HEX to CMYK

Logos and web colors are usually stored as HEX, but a print job needs CMYK. The converter turns the HEX into RGB and then into ink percentages with the standard formula.

Questions

Is K always needed?

Black (K) replaces equal parts of cyan, magenta and yellow, which saves ink and keeps dark tones and text sharp.

Can I get back the same HEX from CMYK?

Only roughly: rounding and the formula lose a little, and a printer profile changes the numbers further.
