How Pantone becomes RAL
- Look up the Pantone code in the Pantone color library and take its published screen value.
- Measure the ΔE2000 distance to all 213 RAL colors and keep the smallest.
- The nearest is RAL 1016, ΔE 4.0. Under 2 is hard to tell apart; above 4 is only a substitute.
Pantone colors are printed inks. A screen value is an approximation, so the nearest Pantone is a starting point: confirm it in a physical Pantone guide.

Questions
Why is the ΔE sometimes large?
RAL Classic has only 213 colors, so many Pantone inks have no close RAL. Then consider RAL Design or a custom mix.
Which should the sign maker get?
Send both the Pantone code and the RAL match with its ΔE, and approve a physical sample.
