How RGB becomes CMYK

CMYK depends on the printer, ink and paper. This is the plain device-independent formula; a print shop's ICC profile gives different numbers.

When you need RGB to CMYK

Screens make color with red, green and blue light; printers lay down cyan, magenta, yellow and black ink. Converting gives a starting point for print files, while the final numbers depend on the printer's ICC profile.

Questions

Why does my print look duller than the screen?

Many bright screen colors, especially greens and blues, are outside what CMYK ink can print, so they come out muted.

Which CMYK should I send the printer?

Ask for their ICC profile, such as FOGRA39 or GRACoL, and convert with it in your design app; use this formula for quick checks.
